Govt mulling changes in working hours, says minister

Minister of Labour and Vocational Training Heng Sour met with members of the European Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (EuroCham) during the annual Human Resources Forum at Oakwood Hotel in Phnom Penh recently.

Sour said that the ministry is looking at better working conditions for professionals and workers in 10 types of services. Under the new seventh mandate, the business environment in Cambodia will be better, he said.

The Minister also said that changes in working hours and pay introduced will be in accordance with the recommendation of Prime Minister Hun Manet. He recounted resolutions from the 19th meeting of the Royal Government-Private Sector on November 13, 2023.

According to the statement by the ministry, Sour confirmed that a new service adjustment will be announced this week.

In addition, Minister Sour urged EuroCham members, who wish to train or increase staff capacity, to register for training at the Ministry’s educational institutions. These institutions will provide free training from Vocational Technical Level 1 to Advanced Technical Degree (Diploma).

Sour also mentioned that currently as many as 1.5 million young people from poor and vulnerable families have received vocational training with an allowance of 280,000 Riels per month.

The Ministry said that in the seventh mandate, vocational training has been named as a key strategy to improve human capital and labour force development. “In a rapidly evolving economy, with digital technology at its forefront, such initiatives ensure each citizen has at least one life skill,” said the Minister.
